AGM 2012 Chairman's report
This has been another extremely successful year for our club, with several awards received –
It was a busy year for Canoe Polo with a full league and more people involved than ever before. Boats were reconditioned and are looking good. Through Dave and his team’s hard work more links are being made within the region through tournaments and also the efforts of Meridian club. New Spraydecks and paddles to be bought soon!
Only ran two thirds of our normal number of sessions this year. We would need more Level 2 coaches in the club to run a full calendar.
Big thank you to Christine, Amanda, Mike, Adam, John, Sam, Jonny, Mark, Dave and the other coaches that helped make the sessions possible.
TYK’s continues to feed into other club sections and has started to run the BCU Cadet Leader award for our older and more capable paddlers as a gateway to becoming coaches.
6 out of 8 new paddlers this year promoted from div 4 to div 3 (+ Rob so that makes 7 promotions)
Isla is 3rd in div 4 ladies and the first J10, Roan is 6th in div 4 men.
Ed was promoted to division 1 at end of season. Well done Ed. Alfie narrowly missed promotion to div 1 and ended the season high in the div 2 rankings.
Jacob promoted from div 4 to div 3 in C1 at Yalding October last year, promoted from div 3 to div 2 during the year and just missed out on promoting from div 2 to div 1 on the last race of the season. Currently 6th in C1 div 2 and the first J16 with a points total of 2714 from 3 races.
We had opportunity for some of our more experienced paddlers to have slalom training sessions at Lee Valley pre Olympics. These training sessions are ongoing.
We had enough paddlers (junior and adult) for a full team and even lent some of our members to other teams.
As a club we successfully ran the div 3 / 4 slalom competition at Yalding in October (despite the inclement rainy weather), a national competition.
This year saw some more of our paddlers lured into the thrills and spills of whitewater. With a trip to HPP, Nottingham in April for some coaching from the respected ‘Live it love it’ team. Additional coaching sessions were held at Hurley when the weather/water permitted.
We had several entries at the Youth Freestyle Final at HPP.
New this year was a Freestyle boot camp in the Alps.
Another successful slalom boot camp and new for this year a freestyle boot camp, also very successful and much enjoyed. Adults enjoyed some training and some excellent river trips
Three since last AGM. Despite the low water levels in November 2011, the club had a fantastic day out at Bantham Beach and enhanced some sea ‘kayakin’ skills. The playboaters made the most of the good surf.
Other trips during the year were to – HPP, Lee Valley, Hurley
Jacob Brown and Dan Norman were chosen to be amongst 20 paddlers (& a course full of rubber ducks) to showcase slalom in front of 2,000 spectators.
To all section leaders, coaches, volunteers, past and present who have worked hard to make the club what it is today!
Looking ahead…
We welcome suggestions. It is YOUR club and any input greatly appreciated.
